In 1858, the Apostolic Vicar Mgr Brunoni gave the young Genovese priest De Negri the task of founding a church on the Asian side of the city. The newly arrived Catholics from Chio made an important contribution, as the plaque commemorating the construction still testifies today. The foundation stone was laid in 1859 and in 1863 the construction of the magnificent church dedicated to the Virgin Mary was partially completed. After twenty-seven years of service in Chalcedon, the founding priest died prematurely at the age of 54. He was succeeded by Don Ammiragli for three years. Meanwhile, the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the Ladies of Sion had established two colleges in this Asian neighborhood. Catholic work had increased with the population and the two priests in charge of the parish were no longer up to the task. More clergy were needed and the idea of a religious order was conceived.<\/p>

By the Holy See's Adnitentibus Nobis Brief of July 2, 1895, Leon XIII entrusted the double Latin and Greek parish of Chalcedon to the Assumptionist Fathers, with the task of carrying out all the necessary works. On June 28, 1895, by Decretum Traditionis, the Pro-Vicar General, Mgr Jean Borgomanero, gave the parish church and all its annexes to the Assumptionists.<\/p>
